Gigapixels

Gigapixel images are multiple images shot in a single scene, sometimes with a mosaic or composite of hundreds of photos, with the resulting stitched image exceeding 1 GB in size (1,000 MB). Images this size, if you were to try and print them, can easily exceed 20 ft x 8 ft (6m x  2.5m).  These large images are also impracticable to download and/or display on the internet. With the use of special internet plug-ins viewing these gigapixel images is now possible. These plugin’s allow the viewer to interact with the image by panning left and right and zooming in and out with portions of an scene. One can easily appreciate the amount of detail that goes into a scene by simply zooming in.

Below are some gigapixel images I have been compiling during local and distant excursions.  Because this is now an extension to my my photography I will be continually adding more gigapixel images so check back from time to time.

Enjoy

Cosmopolitan Hotel and Casino Vegas

At 10.02GB this is the worlds largest multi-image composite to date taken using the Pentax 645D.
The image is comprised of 616 separate RAW images (44 columns by 14 rows) with 25% overlap between images.

The images were shot from the 61st floor of the Cosmopolitan Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Winds were heavy (est 20-30mph with gusts to 45mph) hence the high ISO to get a bit faster shutter speed. Due to the winds the mosaics shot at longer focal lengths were unacceptable giving us excuse to return again in the future - 3 times the charm .

In this gigapixel image you can really see a different perspective captured of Las Vegas. The sunbathers, people in cafes, taxis and limousines. And seeing the Bellagio water feature "turned off" from the 61st floor with sun shining into to the lake allows you to see the hundreds of high pressure water nozzles used to create the stunning water shows.
It was the last weekend of Spring Break in Vegas so the college kids were pool side and all rooms in the Cosmopolitan were booked.
This image almost as a 3 dimensional look to it due to the way the sun reflected off the glass of surrounding hotels and casinos.
Also you'll notice this was shot from the terrace balcony with 270 degree views.

I want to thank the management of the beautiful Cosmopolitan Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, with a special thanks to Kristina Kolk, for helping us to organize and make this happen on such a busy Spring Break weekend. They truly went out of their way to accommodate us.
